We didn't dream up the idea of a fare strike. For example, last year the mere threat of a fare strike in Chicago helped postpone a planned fare hike. Again, this year, under the threat of a fare strike, the authorities in Chicago backed down on a planned fare hike, and somehow found the money to keep the fares from going up.
In 1998, a fare strike in Los Angeles, organized by the LA Bus Riders Union, not only stopped a fare hike, but pressured LA into buying more busses to reduce overcrowding.
If fare strikes can be successful in Chicago and Los Angeles, they can be successful here in San Francisco.
